Boat gliding through the Neek floating river channel, Muyil — Sian Ka'an biosphere, Tulum

The Story Behind This Tour

Most visitors to Tulum stay within a tight circuit — ruins, beach clubs, a cenote or two. It's a good circuit. But the road south to Muyil, past the point where most tourists turn back, leads somewhere completely different.

The Neek is a river channel that flows through the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve — a UNESCO World Heritage site that covers over 500,000 hectares of jungle, lagoon and Caribbean coast. The Mayan civilisation used these waterways as a trading route for centuries. Your guide explains what you're moving through as you travel.

At the Neek itself, you enter the water and float. The current is natural and gentle — the river does the work. You drift through jungle with the canopy overhead, waterway all around, almost no sound except birds and water. It's one of those travel experiences that's genuinely hard to describe and impossible to forget.

Lunch is included and eaten by the water before the return journey. Most guests say this is the best day of their Tulum trip.

"You float through the Mayan jungle in complete silence. It sounds like nothing much — until you're doing it."
